Mustang High School quarterback, Kason Delgado, picked up football midway through sixth grade. Now? He's the #1 ranked QB in Oklahoma.

OKLAHOMA CITY - OklaNews -- Most elite quarterbacks have been taking snaps since Pop Warner. Kason Delgado picked up a football midway through sixth grade.

Five years later, he's the #1-ranked quarterback in Oklahoma and #94 nationally according to QB Hitlist. It's a trajectory that shouldn't exist, built on something most natural-born signal-callers never develop: a mathematician's brain applied to football.

"I look at a football game and I want to be the Grandmaster on the field, very similar to a chess player," Delgado said. "2-3 steps ahead of the defense."

The Mustang High School junior carries a 4.0 GPA with math as his strongest subject, and that analytical foundation shows in how he dissects coverages. This past season, he completed 66% of his passes for 2,239 yards and threw 28 touchdowns while adding 267 rushing yards. He's been clocked at 21.38 MPH in-game—elite speed for any position—but his arm talent is what separates him from other prospects.

"I can fit balls into tight windows," Delgado said. "I have a very quick release which makes it hard for a DB to pick up my pass."

The late start might seem like a disadvantage, but it's actually created a unique development curve. No bad habits cemented at age seven. No burned-out arm from throwing year-round since elementary school. Just pure upward trajectory with room to grow. And now, just five years into his quarterback career, Delgado is already ranked #1 in his state.

The next level has noticed too as Delgado currently holds scholarship offers from Hawaii, Nicholls State, and Towson, with interest from Oklahoma State, Missouri, New Mexico, UTEP, and over two dozen other programs. Meaning, the question isn't what he's accomplished with limited experience, it's what he'll become with a few more years of development.

Editor's Note: During his sophomore season at Edmond Santa Fe, Delgado fractured his collarbone in Week 4 but insisted on finishing the game against his former team, Union High School. He played two more weeks injured before the fracture was diagnosed, ending a season in which he had broken Santa Fe's single-season passing record and was tracking toward 2,500-3,000 yards.
